You Ear Canal Will Establish Your Identity, Says NEC

For most of us biometric identification is synonymous with fingerprint recognition. From our smartphones to our office attendance systems they all use our fingerprints to establish our identity. What if we tell you there is a new way of establishing your identity and that is with the help of your ear. The folks over at NEC Corporation have developed a new biometric identification technology that distinguishes people by the shape of their ear cavities. You might not be aware but the shape of the ear canal differs from person to person and this technology leverages that fact.

The identification is done by an earphone with a built-in microphone that can be plugged into your ear. The earphone is used to produce an acoustic signal lasting a few hundred milliseconds. The acoustic signals travel through the ear canal and most of it is reflected back by the tympanic membrane. The signals which manage to pass the tympanic membrane are reflected within the inner parts of the ear. The reflected signals are picked up by the microphone. A synchronous addition method adds and obtains the average of waveforms of the multiple signals received to eliminate noise. Once the process is complete it calculates how the sound resonates within the ear to determine the unique identity of a person. The entire process gets completed within a second.

To minimise computational complexity two type of signal components have been used in this process. The process has managed to achieve accuracy of more than 99% percent. The team at NEC Corporation says that this form of biometric authentication can be used for continuous authentication of an individual. This means it can be worn by the person working in safety and security, such as in maintenance, management, and security of critical infrastructure to continuously monitor the identity. One of the brilliant aspects of this technology is its implementation in telephone calls where the speaker on the other side can ensure that he/she is communicating with the right person the entire time. The company hopes to commercialise this technology by the year 2018.
